Bigger on the inside than the outside isn't a problem. Bigger on the inside than the outside makes just as much sense as any other wizardry. Moving through space and time isn't a problem either. That's normal. Has been since her Ordeal. That's most of the reason why she became a wizard; that and Darth Vader.

So, really, all of this is perfectly normal, but she can't shake the feeling that there's something familiar about this man who stopped her in the middle of the Crossings and said, "You're looking for something. I find missing things. Let's go." She's sure she hasn't met him before. She'd remember the funny hair and that screwdriver he always waves around and his bad French.

But maybe she's getting forgetful. These days, it seems like she has too much crammed in her head--the whispers of machine-life, all these burning thoughts about stars, and the endless question of where is he why can't she find him. Maybe there's finally too much in her head and things are starting to fall out around the edges.

She doesn't think so, though, and so she says yes to the stranger with candy and a blue box.

"Is that real?" he asks and she's half-afraid he's going to get out the screwdriver and start poking at it, so she puts a hand to her neck and covers the emerald and wonders if he can read the Speech. It's real enough, the emerald, as real as moondust sifting through her fingers.

They do less searching and more running than she might like, but if the universe worked the way she wanted it to, she wouldn't have to be searching at all. Still, the running gets sort of ridiculous.

"Is it always like this?" she asks as a spear thrown by an angry caveman who'd wanted Spot as a gift so that he could woo a lady bounces off the shield that she'd hastily thrown around them.

He grins. "Having fun yet?"

But she isn't here for fun.

Several light years away, they're visiting a planet with these weird psychic water-dwellers. She's sure that they'd be pleasant enough, except that they're in the middle of a battle that she doesn't quite understand and so they have to leave in a hurry and then he mopes around because they weren't able to change anything.

You win some and you lose some. Right now something's lost.

He leaves the door open and they look down at Leera and watch fire bloom over the water.

"Sunsets," he says. "Sunsets."

The sun sets behind the trees in her backyard but keeps shining in the stone that's resting on her lap.

"I don't think I'm going back with you," she says. "At least not right away."

"No," he says.

It's not about what you see but what you don't see, the space between stars. She needs to start searching with her eyes closed.

"Read this again," he says. He taps the emerald that still sits at her throat.

She looks at him.

"And what you're trying to remember is dinosaurs," he says. "Running from dinosaurs."
