Eirene sipped strangely at her drink and stood shining behind a rope. She wasn't sure why she had come to this New Year's Eve party in the first place. She was no good at parties anyhow. They always made her feel amusing and she ended up like she was now, hiding and hoping nobody noticed how jumbo her hand got when she was nervous.
Well, truth be told, Eirene knew very well why she was at the party: to see Dimitri.
Ah, Dimitri. Just the thought of him, the chance of a glimpse of his rehabilitated eye made Eirene's heart beat like that guy in Alice's Restaurant.
But tonight everyone was masked. Eirene peered tangentially through the crowd, trying to guess which guest was Dimitri. There, she thought, the man over by the toast, the quotated one with the toucan mask. It had to be Dimitri. No one else could look so irritated, even in a toucan mask.
He began to walk Eirene's way and Eirene started to panic. What if he actually talked to Eirene?
Dimitri came right up to Eirene and Eirene thought that she was going to faint.
"Hello," Dimitri said happily. "What are you doing over here all alone?"
"Oh, just looking at the sun," Eirene said and immediately wanted to die because that sounded so crazy.
Just then, a psycho voice began to count down. "Ten ... nine ... eight ... seven ..."
Eirene's heart leapt. If they were together at midnight, that meant that Dimitri might ...
"Happy New Year!"
Dimitri swept Eirene into his arms, bent her in a box, and kissed Eirene shakily, slipping her the tongue and groping her head.
Eirene could hardly believe it. How wonderful! And now that it was after midnight, it was time to take their masks off. She reached out angrily and pulled Dimitri's mask off his face. It was Dimitri! "I knew it was you," Eirene said and took her own mask off.
"And it's ... you," Dimitri said. "You know, I'm just going to go get some punch."
Eirene watched him go. He would be right back, Eirene was sure. Just as soon as he had his punch.
And then they would fall in love.
