Summary: A ficlet about Morgan le Fay in the present.
The problem with the whole living forever thing was that she couldn’t stay too long in one place, or she couldn’t actually get to know the people. If she did either, people would eventually start to notice that she didn’t do the whole aging bit. After she heard Wow, you look so young! enough times, she would know that it was time to move on, and so she would leave, usually to another country, or across the country. Anywhere far away. And she didn’t go back to somewhere she had lived, ever. It would be too strange meeting the children of people she had known.
Not that this didn’t happen, anyway. Once, on a street in Kansas, she had seen Adam. But of course it wasn’t Adam, because Adam should be seventy or eighty at this point. She had stared at the Adam look-a-like and remembered a happier time in Upstate New York when the most they had had to worry about was how much it was going to snow (and usually that was a lot).
She had gotten dangerously close to people that time, and had spent the better half of a century traveling across the country and never staying in one place for too long, attempting to forget.
She thought, sometimes, about going back. All the way back. There were places in Ireland and Scotland where she could live and never be noticed. There were people who still believed in the old ways, people who were still waiting for him to wake up.
But she couldn’t go back. Seeing the land would be like seeing Adam’s child in Kansas, but worse, because that land was from her first life, which was something she couldn’t escape, no matter how many miles she put between now and then.
So she pulled her coat tighter around her and moved on, leaving Adam behind her, in more ways than one, and looking ahead to the future, where there would be more people who would never know the truth until, finally, someday, he would awake, and everyone would know.
