ending of The Golden Compass the way it was meant to be

This could have been amazing. Instead, we got the watered-down let's-be-happy version. But here's a taste of what was supposed to happen.

I was SO upset by the way they did the ending. Especially since it's my favourite bit of the book and it meant that Daniel & Nicole were never on screen together as Asriel/Marisa. I was really shocked when it ended as well because of all the stuff I'd seen in the trailer (I was waiting for the bit they showed when they were together before he goes across the bridge)!!! Not impressed at all. Why did they cut it when they'd clearly filmed it and it looked really good and was the most dramatic bit. I heard suggestions they were saving it for the beginning of the next movie, but seeing as it hasn't been guarenteed it'll be such a waste if they never use it!

Yeah, they apparently decided that it would make a nice tie-in for the second movie, since then we move to what's going on with Will. Which...may be true. But it would have been an awesome ending for the first movie, so I'm not sure. And since, like you said, there's no guarantee of a second movie, it's really a pity that the footage wasn't used.
