made for the challenge at [livejournal.com profile] 1sentence

1. Ring.
“They’ll call this Stonehenge one day,” she says, but can’t say how she knows that when he asks her.

2. Hero.
She grins and gives Lancelot a hug, beating Arthur to it by only a few seconds.

3. Memory.
She remembers when he was a small child who would cling to her, chubby arms around her neck, and smell of sweetness.

4. Box.
“You got me a present?” she says, already taking the small box from his hands and smiling.

5. Run.
His reign will bring stability, but in the chaos of another battle, with a Saxon bearing down on her, using his superior weight to its fullest advantage, it’s hard to remember that; it’s Arthur who saves her, that time.

6. Hurricane.
She’s like a great wind all around him, making it difficult to focus on anything else, but wild and exhilarating nonetheless.

7. Wings.
“We’ll fly away, Arthur; I’ll take you away from all of this and we’ll be free,” she says into his hair, but it is, and always will be, a lie.

8. Cold.
It’s not proper, but for once he doesn’t even think of it, and let’s her wrap him in her cloak as they huddle together, wondering if someone will find them in time.

9. Red.
Her gown is red; that is what he will remember when he thinks about that day, and how he held her in his arms while his wife raged about them.

10. Drink.
She lets herself believe it’s the wine she drank, but as his lips move against hers, she knows it’s much more than a simple drink.

11. Midnight.
It’s indecent, the king and his sister under the stars on is cloak, with her skirts up around her waist like she’s some peasant girl, and he no better, but his hand grazes her abdomen, and she doesn’t care.

12. Temptation.
He doesn’t understand why he can’t believe in the religion of Avalon and the religion of the Christians, both, and with the Christians so focused on temptation, sometimes he wonders why anyone believes.

13. View.
She claps and laughs as she watches Arthur and Lancelot joust, and, beside her, Guinevere is laughing, too; for once the girl’s presence doesn’t even bother her.

14. Music.
“May I have this dance?” he asks her, and she says yes, because he’s the king.

15. Silk.
The silk of her gown moves beneath his fingers, and the only thing he wants at that very moment is to be alone with her, but he can’t, so he bows a little deeper, and moves on.

16. Cover.
Her hair is plastered to her head from the rain, but she doesn’t seem to notice as, laughing, she pulls him toward the shelter of a tree.

17. Promise.
“I will always love you, Arthur; nothing will change that, not even you.”

18. Dream.
In her dreams, she’s always too late, which is why, when the world begins collapsing around them all, she tries to hope; dying in her arms is better than dying alone.

19. Candle.
“Don’t you need a light?” he asks her when he finds her in the darkened Great Hall, but she tells him it’s better in the dark, which is true.

20. Talent.
He urges her to sing, and the rest of the hall laughs, to see the king tease his sister; she laughs, too, but for a very different reason.

21. Silence.
She remarks that they don’t have much to say to each other and he continues to sit in silence; she doesn’t know how they’ve gotten to this point.

22. Journey.
If she’d set out a few days earlier or a few days later, they would never have met, but she didn’t, and she can’t say she regrets it.

23. Fire.
His hands on her sides seem to burn, and as she moans into his mouth, her hips move of their own accord, her back arching; she throws her head back, and it’s just about feeling.

24. Strength.
He’s crying, and she holds his head against her chest and strokes his hair like he’s still the little child she used to look after.

25. Mask.
She turns away so he can’t see her face before replying; she tells him that it doesn’t matter, that it’s fine; it’s a lie, but he believes it, and it doesn’t matter, it doesn’t matter.

26. Ice.
When the snow is at its thickest, he has the fire stoked higher, and if she sits a little too close to him, well, that’s just because it’s cold; after all, Guinevere is leaning on his other side, laughing.

27. Fall.
The first time she looks at the child, she doesn’t see the fall of Camelot; she sees his face, and she’s not sure if she can bear to look at a reminder of him every day.

28. Forgotten.
He doesn’t remember much of the early years with his sister, but he does remember little things: the sparkle of sunlight in her eyes, the feel of her hair against his cheek, her voice as she sings him to sleep.

29. Dance.
“Shouldn’t you be looking for your wife?” she asks coldly, a low blow, but she doesn’t care and turns away to be lost amid the festivities.

30. Body.
Her son’s body is limp in her arms, and she cries, her tears falling onto his hair, feeling helpless; she looks across at her brother, and he’s no better; she’s going to lose them both.

31. Sacred.
He finds her praying, and while the concept doesn’t strike him as odd, the first thing he thinks when he sees her is that half his court would be shocked that Morgan, follower of the Old Religion, prays.

32. Farewells.
She doesn’t get to say goodbye to him because Uther won’t let her; for years, she remembers the game of marbles she promised him but never played.

33. World.
She doesn’t want to give up her freedom, she never has, and the child is going to force her to stay in one place to care for him, just one more unforeseen consequence.

34. Formal.
Their eyes meet across the crowd in the Great Hall, but he is supposed to be holding court, and it isn’t proper for him to cut that short to deal with the problems of a woman; he’ll come to her when he can.

35. Fever.
Half the court is sick, the other half rapidly succumbing, themselves, so she sets up cots in the Great Hall and moves between them, trying to ease their passing; the king has his own room, but she does not have the time to care for him as well.

36. Laugh.
When he says he’ll be with her forever, she laughs, because even then, somehow, she knows that forever for her is far longer than forever for him.

37. Lies.
They never directly lie to anyone; they just don’t tell people everything and, later, she will wonder if it would have been better for her to shout the truth of her child’s parentage from the rooftops, instead.

38. Forever.
She learns early on that nothing can last forever, and that’s what scares her, every time he kisses her.

39. Overwhelmed.
Some days, she feels like she’s the one ruling, and she can hardly bear the strain, but, at the same time, she would like to, if only to see him smile at her again.

40. Whisper.
She whispers his name into the dark and, as with before, is surprised when she receives no reply.

41. Wait.
Every day at the convent, she does what she is told and knows that she is simply waiting for the day when she can escape and find her little brother again.

42. Talk.
She is happy jut to stand in the back of the Great Hall and watch him as he sits on the steps to the dais, talking to commoners as if he is one of them.

43. Search.
“We’ll find her,” she says, squeezing his hand, but he shakes off the contact and turns away, not seeing the hurt on her face.

44. Hope.
“Hope is dead,” he manages to choke out, which makes her want to slap him, even if he is dying, because hope is never dead, not while someone still lives; she kisses him, instead.

45. Eclipse.
She tells him they should celebrate the eclipse, not cower in fear as the priests advice, so he lets his people do what they will, and has a banquet, should anyone wish to come.

46. Gravity.
It gets to the point where she can no longer sit near him, for fear that his presence will pull her in, and cause her to reveal something that would destroy them all.

47. Highway.
On their journey to Camelot, he learns quite quickly that she can take care of herself, but is too shy to ask how she learned such things in a convent.

48. Unknown.
She could have told him about the child, she could have, but she could never say how he would react, she does not.

49. Lock.
She can never completely shut him out of her life, even when she is at Lothian, even when she leaves Camelot to try to find herself (which fails, because she left her heart behind with him, and therefore had nothing to find).

50. Breathe.
“Breathe,” she whispers to him, as the boat rocks them gently, and she knows that someday, perhaps not now, but someday, he will breathe again.

This is beautiful and heartbreaking. It's been a very long time since I've thought of Arthur and his half-sister, I don't even have my books anymore, but your words top them all and bring a vulnerability to the characters, especially Morgan, that's unexpected.

You know, having someone who shares my love for Arthurian legends, and for Morgan/Morgaine alike, is making me extremely happy.
